Russian general Sergei Surovikin was spotted in Algeria as part of a Defence Ministry delegation months after disappering following Wagner group's mutiny attempt in June amid Russia-Ukraine war. In his last video in June, Surovikin urged Wagnery group to abort the operation and turn back.The Kommersant newspaper reported citing a source close to the general. The newspaper published photographs of Surovikin wearing a khaki suit without military insignia that it said had been taken in Algeria, a major buyer of Russian weapons. Russian authorities have reportedly detained General Sergei Surovikin, the deputy commander of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, amid a reported purge of military officials following the short-lived rebellion by Wagner mercenary forces. He has not been seen in public since past Saturday, with US intelligence reportedly claiming that he had prior knowledge of the uprising led by the Wagner chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin. Prigozhin had welcomed his appointment as overall Commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine post in 2022, calling him a “legendary figure” and “born to serve his motherland”. Just two days after his appointment as Overall Commande rin Ukraine, Russia had unleashed the largest barrage of missiles and air strikes since the invasion in February, pushing the war into a deadlier new phase . He was later sacked from this post. Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Monday praised his army's "loyalty" during an armed uprising last month by the Wagner military group that targeted the country's senior military leadership. New revelations about the armed uprising by the Wagner Group in Russia. The Moscow Times is reporting that the deputy chief of staff of Russia's armed forces has been arrested. The paper says General Sergei Surovikin is being held on suspicion of being involved in Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion. 'Ukraine War: Putin PURGED General Armageddon?' Some of Russia's top generals haven't been seen since the Wagner mutiny. Is Vladimir Putin purging his own commanders? Known as ‘General Armageddon’ on account of a ruthless and brutal reputation forged in the Syrian war, he was put in command of Russian forces in Ukraine late last year. He’s reported to have been very close to Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. Surovikin was last seen in a video on the 24th of June, in which he encouraged Wagner troops to call off the mutiny. It’s been speculated that the apparently exhausted looking Surovikin may have been making the statement under duress. And he’s not the only top general that’s been absent from view since the mutiny. Valery Gerasimov, who was often singled out for criticism by Wagner’s Prigozhin, has also not been seen in public for a week. Die Reise zeuge davon, dass die Militärführung in Moskau der Kooperation mit dem arabischsprachigen Raum größere Bedeutung zumesse und weiter Vertrauen in Surowikin habe, zitierte die Tageszeitung «Kommersant» am Freitag einen Informanten aus dem Umkreis des Generals. Das Blatt spekuliert, dass der General einen mit dem Nahostthema verbundenen Posten bekommen könnte. Die Zeitung veröffentlichte Fotos, die den 56-Jährigen in Algerien zeigen sollen. Auch der mit der Wagner-Gruppe verbundene Telegram-Kanal Grey Zone publizierte ähnliche Bilder. Für Moskau war auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent lange die Söldnertruppe Wagner des Milliardärs Jewgeni Prigoschin aktiv. Prigoschins Einheiten kämpften auch in der Ukraine. Allerdings startete Prigoschin im Juni einen kurzlebigen Aufstand gegen die Militärführung um Verteidigungsminister Sergej Schoigu und Generalstabschef Waleri Gerassimow. General Sergey Surovikin, also known as General Armageddon, has been ordered to work with the Wagner mercenary group. General Surovikin will be teaming up with the Wagner group for a final assault to take the city of Bakhmut. Er war auch Stellvertreter von Generalstabschef Gerassimow als Kommandeur des Kriegs in der Ukraine. Surowikin, der wegen seines martialischen Vorgehens im Syrien-Krieg "General Armageddon" genannt wird, wurde zuletzt nicht mehr in der Öffentlichkeit gesehen. Der "New York Times" zufolge soll Surowikin vorab über die Söldner-Rebellion informiert gewesen sein. Die Moral der russischen Armee ist nach Ansicht britischer Geheimdienstexperten durch den Abschuss von Hubschraubern und eines Flugzeuges während des Wagner-Aufstands geschwächt worden "Kurzfristig wird der psychologische Schock, eine große Zahl an Crewmitgliedern auf diese Weise verloren zu haben, beinahe sicher die Moral der russischen Luftstreitkräfte schwächen", so der Geheimdienstbericht des Verteidigungsministeriums in London. Bundeskanzler Scholz rief die EU derweil zum Durchhalten bei ihrer Unterstützung für die Ukraine auf. Das könnte Surowikins neue Aufgabe sein | WELT News Der nach dem Putsch der Wagner-Söldner lange verschollene russische General Sergej Surowikin soll nach Medienberichten mit einer Delegation des Verteidigungsministeriums zu Verhandlungen in Algerien sein. Die Reise zeuge davon, dass die Militärführung in Moskau der Kooperation mit dem arabischsprachigen Raum größere Bedeutung zumesse und weiter Vertrauen in Surowikin habe, zitierte die Tageszeitung «Kommersant» am Freitag einen Informanten aus dem Umkreis des Generals. Das Blatt spekuliert, dass der General einen mit dem Nahostthema verbundenen Posten bekommen könnte. Die Zeitung veröffentlichte Fotos, die den 56-Jährigen in Algerien zeigen sollen. Auch der mit der Wagner-Gruppe verbundene Telegram-Kanal Grey Zone publizierte ähnliche Bilder. Für Moskau war auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent lange die Söldnertruppe Wagner des Milliardärs Jewgeni Prigoschin aktiv. Prigoschins Einheiten kämpften auch in der Ukraine. Allerdings startete Prigoschin im Juni einen kurzlebigen Aufstand gegen die Militärführung um Verteidigungsminister Sergej Schoigu und Generalstabschef Waleri Gerassimow. Obwohl er den Aufstand selbst beendete und vom Kreml offiziell begnadigt wurde, kam Prigoschin im August bei einem mutmaßlich absichtlich herbeigeführten Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben. Seither versucht das Verteidigungsministerium die Wagner-Verbindungen in Afrika zu übernehmen. Surowikin war im Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine von Oktober 2022 bis Januar 2023 Oberbefehlshaber der russischen Truppen in der Ukraine. Er galt als einer der wichtigsten Verbündeten Prigoschins in der russischen Armee bei dessen Machtkampf mit Schoigu und Gerassimow. Den Aufstand von Prigoschins Wagner-Truppe Ende Juni verurteilte Surowikin zwar öffentlich, er wurde danach aber nicht mehr in der Öffentlichkeit gesehen. Mitte August wurde er als Chef der russischen Luft- und Raumfahrttruppen Medienberichten zufolge seines Amtes enthoben.
