It all happened back in 1968 when a group of friends, tired of swimming against the current of the Drina River, decided to get some rest on top of the rock. They immediately got bothered by the rough surface of the rock and went back to the shore to bring back some boards on which they could lay on. Right after that, they decided to put the boards vertically and use them as cover. And just like that, this group of boys came up with the idea for a house on top of a rock. The house is now one of Serbia’s most treasured places. It’s a great spot to connect with nature, enjoying the river and the forest around. Some of us might add our own special touch with a house plant or an accent wall but others go a little bit further. Today we are going to take a look at 10 of the most unusual houses in the world…Let’s get started... #10. A Marine Themed Retreat in MexicoWell, it might not be a pineapple under the sea but this water-themed design is really quite a marvel. In Mexico City there is a home designed by Javier Senosiain of Arquitectura Organics. you might think it was just a really big seashell. Of course, there is more to this home than just a stylish facade, the incredible artistic touches extend into the home as well. The giant wall of colored mosaics on the front side of the structure works with natural sunlight to bath the living room in rainbow light. Designer Javier Senosian was inspired by the works of Gaudi and Frank Lloyd Wright, as a tribute to the later, this stunning home features natural plantings and multiple spiral staircases throughout. Currently, the house is home to a young family with 2 children. Opinions vary on whether this awesome piece of architecture more closely resembles a snail or a seashell, but perhaps the answer is irrelevant, the very purpose of the design was part of what Javier Senosian called “Bio-Architecture”, a calculated effort to make the home blend into the natural scenery. #9. A Home of Holy Origins in HollandAs it turns out, the idea of converting a church into a modern home is far from unique and has been done multiple times around the world. But the number 9 entry on today's list is quite possibly the most striking.Saint Jakobs church was originally built in 1870 in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, it operated for over 100 years until all ceremonies and operations ceased in 1991. After that point, it was used mainly as a showroom for antique furniture and an occasional venue for concerts and special events. Over time though the gorgeous building was left all but abandoned until 2007 when a company called Zecc Architects stepped up and proposed a residential conversion project to breathe some life back into the old structure. Permission was eventually granted and by 2009 work was complete on what Zecc dubbed the Residential Church XL. the interior is an elegant mix of old and new, with the classic stained glass windows remaining untouched and the interior design boasting simple, bright elegance. #8. Porteugeuse Stone HomeKnown locally as Casa Do Penedo, the Stone House is an architectural monument located in northern Portugal. The idea for it came about as a means of making the home blend in with the surrounding landscape, construction began in 1972 and was completed 2 years later. The home consists of a foundation, ceiling, and walls made from massive boulders. Originally the owners used the building as a holiday home but today the house has become a popular tourist attraction and is the site of a small museum that commemorates the history of the Stone House.#7. Japanese Slide HouseIf you're watching this, chances are, you were once a small child. Unfortunately, as we grow up most of us stop hanging around playgrounds, but the next house on our list may help you get in touch with your inner child. In Meguro-ku, Japan there is a 3 story, 1,762 square foot home designed by Japanese Studio LEVEL Architects - the home is appealing from the outside but what really sets it apart is what’s inside. Connecting the 3 floors is a set of staircases on one side of the house and a pair of slides on the other...that’s right, slides. For the family who lives there, it means an unforgettable decent for their children who frequently use the slide to travel between floors. But slides aren’t the only kid-friendly feature this house has to offer in fact, this private play palace also has a ball pit, and a reading nook. As for the other rooms in the house, the entire family shares a single massive sleeping space that encompasses the third floor, the home also features a kitchen and a dedicated study space. All in all, this house is an incredible marriage of fun and function, that guarantees a one of a kind childhood.#6. World’s Smallest House in GermanyAlright so our number 6 entry just barely made it on to the list but since it was deemed a house by its designer we’ll give it a pass.

Looking more like the products of an architect’s brain on LSD, these houses push the term “avant garde” to its limit. From a house built into a clock, to a house that has no regard for your privacy, yes there is such a thing so stay tuned till the end to know more about it, here are 10 of the most unusual houses in the world. Number 10. The Clocktower Penthouse If you’re like me, you hate the sound of your alarm clock in the morning, so can you imagine living inside the clock itself? The good thing is, this clock doesn’t chime every hour. Atop One Main Street in Brooklyn, New York, an iconic clock tower was transformed into a stunning triplex penthouse, located in the trendy DUMBO or the down under the Manhattan bridge overpass neighborhood. The apartment is part of an old industrial building that was originally built by cardboard manufacturers, and the tower transformation project was developed by David Walentas – the man behind the DUMBO project itself. The jaw-dropping 6,813 square feet penthouse offers you a 360 degree view of the city, overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan. Its signature feature, however, are the four massive clocks, installed in 14-foot-high round windows on each wall. The three-story apartment, with the ceiling going from 16 to 50 feet in height, also has a glass elevator running up its center. The penthouse of the Clock Tower building entered the market in 2009 as the most expensive condo in Brooklyn, listed for $25 million – till then, the most expensive apartment on record had cost a mere $11 million. The realtors, however, have been unsuccessful in selling the Clock Tower penthouse, and it’s now down to $18 million, not exactly a bargain but hey, it’s a small price to pay if you want to live in a clock. Number 9. The Croft House This house is a major work of architectural greatness and has been recognized as so around the world. If follows a very minimalist yet modern design and is located in Victoria, Australia. If you don’t know exactly where it is, it’s quite difficult to find as it blends with the surrounding hill sides. The home was designed by James Stockwell, whose idea was to build a house that blends in with the land surrounding it. Quite unlike many of the other houses in this list, it is an easy home to maintain. Mainly because of the materials used to build it, which are quite unusual. Zinc, among other metals, was used as well as compressed sand resulting into a surprisingly sturdy structure. The home is surrounded by wide ceiling to floor windows allowing for a lot of natural sunlight to enter the residence. A great feature about this house is that it is incorporated with solar energy, which not only makes the house “green” but also reduces living costs. Number 8. The Seashell House Many have wondered what life would be like living in a sea shell, and that was the exact inspiration behind the beautifully crafted Nautilus. This giant seashell house is located in Mexico City, and was built and designed by Javier Senosiain and was built back in 2006. The house features a smooth front facade met with a giant wall of colored mosaics, lighting up the living space in a stunning rainbow effect. Whether you think it looks like a giant snail or seashell, the home is definitely quite strange, but it was actually designed to blend in with the natural surroundings in what Senosiain likes to call “Bio- Architecture.” Inspired by the work of Gaudí and Frank Lloyd Wright, the house is dominated by smooth surfaces, spiral stairs and natural plantings that makes it feel like you’re living inside a shell. it’s a real house built for a young family with two children who were tired living in a conventional home and wanted to change to one integrated to nature. Number 7. The Pole House This house is as dramatic as it is simple. Designed and built by F2 Architecture, the Pole House overlooks the Great Ocean Road in Australia and takes advantage of its location and spectacular views in a very unusual way. The plot on which it was built is a steep hillside which obviously presented a challenge. The architects came up with the most intriguing solution. they built a concrete platform on a 13-meter-high pylon and they put the house on top.

Berson House is a builders house that challenges the traditional narrative of a home in terms of structure, materiality and purpose. Drawing on the impactful nature of unique and unusual interior spaces, Monster Ideas Architects turns an existing pre-1945 house into a bold, multi-functional home. Solidifying its strong approach from the outset, Berson House’s façade stands out in Norman Park with its geometric and demanding street presence. Craig Webster from Monster Ideas Architects overcomes initial barriers with ingenuity, tasked with a steep, challenging site in an uninhabitable state. While the new development was limited to two levels, this was overcome by moving the form up the slope of the site to create a large-scale, five-storey structure. As the builders house, the design aspires to do something different and daring. Along with three children’s bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, a wine cellar and an isolated retreat for the parents, each level hosts a range of distinct features, including a two-storey climbing wall, an indoor soccer field and a 20-metre lap pool. The pool is thoughtfully integrated with the lower floors and has been punctuated with beautiful large windows so you can see the pool from the street, the kid's bedrooms and the wine cellar. Materiality and furnishings keep with the bold, unorthodox theme of the builders house – contemporary, modern injections dominate alongside darker, moody tones. Tongue & Groove’s natural grade European Oak Timber in a narrow-board style is used for soffit lining and bathroom ceilings, with wider boards installed on the floors. These timber planks are also incorporated into the custom dining table in the wine cellar. The Tongue & Groove timber supports the dark interior by injecting warmth into the space, counterbalancing the coldness of the concrete and the sharpness of the black, charred ironbark timber walls. Spatial dimensions within the builders house have been re-engineered to welcome a modern lifestyle. Every part of Berson House is about maximising space and removing corridors. For example, the living, dining, kitchen and terrace are each a quadrant. The home’s elevated position helps connect the house to the surrounding panoramic views of suburbia in one direction and across the city to the west. In a way, the residence becomes transparent, with large windows and doors featured heavily throughout, which also welcome in light and provide ventilation. Berson House evokes an experience of the home that is unlike any other. It is simultaneously refined, playful, bold and innovative. So, a house that floats and on water and moves like a boat is not a farfetched idea. Bonnie always felt that she belonged on the water. One day Bonnie got an idea when her boat builder friend, Denis Tremblay, convinced her that a tiny houseboat was the way to live alternatively, and they ended up making this! This is a 4-season houseboat because it is fully insulated and has an antique wood-burning fireplace to provide heat in winter. Well, not this one. When Christoph Kaiser spotted a flat-pack grain silo from the 1950s for sale on Craigslist, he thought his storage problems were over. But a quick Google search for similar projects led him down a different path, and something extraordinary was made instead. He embarked on an 18-month long project to fashion it into the tiny home of their dreams. And tiny it is: The 366-square-foot home doesn't have any rooms, just an upstairs bed loft and a downstairs, which includes the kitchen and a bathroom. Kaiser ended up building the kitchen cabinets himself. as well as a sliding glass door on wheels that opens up to the backyard and the outdoor shower. In the house, a space-saving spiral staircase leads to the mezzanine bedroom. The bath is the only private space in the open-plan layout. Heliodome Eric Wasser, a cabinet-maker in France, took time away from his day-job to construct his fabulous new home. It’s a futuristic home, shaped like a sundial, that harnesses the power of the sun and is very environmentally conscious. The building stands at 2,238.8 square-feet (208 square meters), and it used local companies to create the frame, which earns an A+ in thinking locally. To ensure good thermal inertia, it stands on a concrete base and to heat the water, solar panels positioned on the edge of the roof capture sunlight. This place is environmentally friendly, and it’s earned Wasser some business; three have been delivered to customers thus far, and two more are on their way. 3. Keret House This house right here can be found in Warsaw, Poland stuck between two buildings, and it’s the world’s skinniest house, An architect named Jakub Szczesny first pitched the idea for the house at the WolaArt festival in 2009 and saw it come to life not long after. At its thinnest, this house measures a tiny 3.02 feet; at its widest, a mere 4.99 feet! Etgar Keret, an Israeli writer, and filmmaker was the houses first tenant, and that is where the place draws its name from. Inside, there’s a kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom, a living area, and two unopening windows spread over two floors. To get between the levels, one must climb or descend a ladder as the space is too small for stairs. It’s so tiny that it can’t even fit a full refrigerator and can only fit a two beverage deal. He purchased the property in Catalonia, Spain in 1973 and did some truly amazing things to it.
